We have developed a new soundproofing wall construction method that improves constructability and safety.

Vertex Co., Ltd. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuzuru Yamamoto; hereinafter referred to as "the Company") has jointly developed a new sound barrier structure called "Stream Panel" (Registration No.: 7047758) with Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Hisada) and the Railway Technical Research Institute (Kokubunji City, Tokyo; Chairman: Kimitoshi Ashiya), which integrates the curb and sound barrier into a single structure for construction.
Until now, sound barriers used in railway viaducts and other structures have faced construction challenges such as prolonged construction periods due to complex construction processes, and maintenance challenges such as the risk of spalling due to aging deterioration. This construction method uses precast members made of highly durable ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete (UFC) to construct the sound barrier from the curb to the wall as a single integrated unit. Compared to conventional methods, this method has fewer work steps and can shorten the construction period. In addition, by integrating the panel and curb into a single structure, external scaffolding and formwork assembly required for curb construction can be omitted, improving constructability. Furthermore, the risk of spalling of the sound barrier surface due to aging deterioration can be reduced, and improved safety and reduced maintenance burden can be expected. Structural tests have confirmed sufficient crack resistance, bending strength, and fatigue durability of this method. Sound insulation tests have also confirmed that it has sound insulation performance equivalent to conventional sound barriers.
Going forward, our company will actively propose the introduction of this construction method, contributing to improved constructability and safety, as well as reduced maintenance burden, for railway civil engineering structures, including elevated bridges to which sound barriers are applied.
[Overview of construction method]
A precast member (precast sound barrier) that integrates the curb section and the sound barrier section is installed on the outside of the curb embedded reinforcing bars that protrude from the slab. A precast member (embedded formwork) that also serves as the formwork for the curb section is installed on the track side, and after connecting the two with separators, the concrete for the curb section is poured to construct it (Figure 1).
To enhance adhesion with the curb concrete, the inside of the precast members has a uniformly uneven surface, while the outer precast members (precast sound barriers) are fitted with dowel reinforcement (Figure 2).
