The Vertex Group (referring to Vertex Corporation and its group companies, hereinafter referred to as "our group") aims to realize its purpose: "To provide a new form of security for the future of people around the world through 'one-of-a-kind technology' and 'unique ideas'."
Our group's management objectives are "contributing to society" and "the happiness of our employees." We provide value to society through our business, and we also value ensuring that each and every person working within our group is respected and can demonstrate their abilities in a safe, healthy, and comfortable working environment.
Through the manufacture of various products, including precast concrete products and slope disaster prevention-related products, as well as infrastructure-related businesses concerning national resilience, disaster prevention, and disaster mitigation, we contribute to building social infrastructure that supports the safety and security of people's lives and local communities.
Our group believes that respecting human rights in all aspects of our business activities is essential for achieving both a sustainable society and the sustainable growth of our company. Based on this understanding, we have established this policy and will promote initiatives to respect human rights.
I. Basic Concepts
1. Positioning and Scope of Application
This policy applies to all officers and employees of our group (including full-time employees, contract employees, temporary staff, part-time employees, trainees, etc.).
Furthermore, we expect our suppliers, partner companies, logistics operators, construction partners, and other business partners to also implement human rights respect initiatives based on this policy, and we ask for their understanding and cooperation in putting these into practice.
2. Respect for international standards
Our group supports and respects internationally recognized human rights, such as the International Bill of Human Rights and the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, and fulfills its responsibility to respect human rights based on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. We comply with the laws and regulations of the countries and regions in which we conduct business activities, and in cases where there are differences between laws and regulations and international human rights standards, we respect internationally recognized human rights concepts and strive to take appropriate action.
Furthermore, we will implement specific measures, including human rights due diligence, in accordance with the "Guidelines for Respecting Human Rights in Responsible Supply Chains, etc." formulated by the Japanese government.
3. Basic Principles Concerning Respect for Human Rights
Our group respects the dignity of all people and does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, forced labor, child labor, or other human rights violations. We believe that respect for human rights is not limited to compliance with laws and regulations, but also includes creating an environment in which workers can work safely, securely, and with a sense of purpose, allowing them to fully utilize their abilities.
II. Priority Initiatives
4. Human rights issues to focus on
Based on the human rights risks identified and assessed through human rights due diligence, our group will focus on the following six issues. We will address these issues through the initiatives outlined in sections 5 through 8, aiming for prevention, mitigation, correction, and continuous improvement. Specific priority issues and measures will be reviewed based on periodic evaluations.
- A safe and healthy work environment
We strive to ensure safety and health and prevent accidents and disasters in all workplaces, including factories, manufacturing sites, and construction sites. Furthermore, we continuously improve the workplace environment through safety education, rule development, equipment improvements, and sharing of near-miss incidents.
- Job satisfaction and ability development
We strive to create an environment where each individual can feel comfortable and fulfilled in their work while demonstrating their abilities, by ensuring proper working hours, securing rest and vacation time, providing fair wages, fair treatment, welfare benefits, and maintaining physical and mental health.
- Diversity and Inclusion
We respect the individuality and values of diverse individuals and promote the creation of a workplace where everyone, including women, young people, the elderly, people with disabilities, and foreigners, can thrive.
- Prohibition of discrimination and harassment
We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion/belief, social status, employment status, etc.
- Prohibition of forced labor and child labor
We do not tolerate any form of forced labor, human trafficking, or child labor. We strive to prevent these not only within our own company but also throughout our supply chain.
- Respect for freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
We respect workers' freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, and we strive for sincere dialogue.
5. Respect for human rights in the supply chain
Our group believes it is important to address the key issues listed in section 4, as well as other aspects of respecting human rights, throughout our entire supply chain, including raw material procurement, manufacturing, logistics, construction, and maintenance.
Therefore, we will work with our suppliers and partners to promote initiatives such as respect for human rights, occupational safety and health, fair wages and working conditions, and prevention of discrimination and harassment. Specific details regarding the implementation of human rights due diligence will be as stipulated in Section 6.
6. Human Rights Due Diligence and Remedies
Our group will establish and operate a human rights due diligence mechanism for human rights risks, including key issues. Through this mechanism, we will work to identify, prevent, mitigate, and correct negative impacts on human rights in our business activities and supply chain.
Furthermore, we will establish a safe and reliable consultation and reporting channel for employees, business partners, and others, providing information that is understandable to all, including foreign workers. This channel will be accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, including workers at partner companies and suppliers, while also protecting those who report or seek advice.
If it becomes clear that our group has caused or been involved in any negative impact on human rights, we will strive to take appropriate corrective and remedy measures and prevent recurrence.
III. Promotion System and Disclosure
7.Education, Dissemination, and Dialogue with Stakeholders
To ensure the effectiveness of this policy and our efforts toward key priorities, our group will systematically implement human rights education for our officers and employees to promote understanding and practice.
Furthermore, we strive for continuous improvement in our human rights initiatives through constructive dialogue with our employees, local communities, investors, customers, suppliers, and others.
This policy will be reviewed as needed, taking into account social conditions, stakeholder expectations, relevant laws and regulations, and trends in international standards.
8. Governance and Disclosure
This policy and our approach to key issues will be implemented appropriately under the supervision of the Board of Directors.
Furthermore, the Sustainability Committee, chaired by the President, will establish a policy regarding human rights respect initiatives based on this policy and promote specific measures. We will strive to appropriately disclose the status of these initiatives through our website, integrated reports, and other means.
This policy was formulated with the assistance of human rights experts and approved by the Board of Directors of Vertex Corporation.
